What do you do when you get back from holiday? Simple, just go and taste some of new places in town. I have been hearing for the last couple of months some very good things about Viet Kitchen. I had to try it out.
Set up by Peter Cuong Franklin, formerly at Chom Chom, Viet Kitchen serves a more traditional Vietnamese kitchen. Viet Kitchen is located in the lobby of Nexxus building in central’s Connaught Road which I have never been a great fan. Having said that as soon as you step inside the restaurant, you simply forget that you are in a office building but really into a nice trendy restaurant designed by the same guys behind Yarbird and Little Bao to name a few. I love the atmosphere, the use of colors and the hundreds of hand painted masks handing on the walls.
Ok so we go a nice décor and relatively quiet environment but what about food? Is it any good? Let’s get one thing straight, I did not have their star dish aka the Pho. I simply felt going for something else.
I have always love a good tom yum soup but never it had in a salad. Guess what I had to go for it. Great cooking on the shrimp and great way to showcase the flavor of the tom yum in an alternative way.
The second starter was the steamed shrimp and pork ravioli. Very interesting flavors where instead of pasta sheet, the shrimp and pork were wrapped in rice sheet. The broth was perfect.
The third starter which was the soft shell crab and coriander tempura, was a slight disappointment as the tempura batter was a bit soggy and tastless. The coriander flavor did not really shine.
The main was perfect. I picked the Claypot Chicken in its caramel sauce. Loved it. Probaly the best dish of the evening. I could have licked the plate.
My overall experience was great and went back for one of their lunch which was perfectly priced with great dish to sample including the famous Pho. No space or time simply head to Viet Baguette for a quick on the go meal.
